  • Lead is up 32.75%

Significance:

Continued volatility has been met by low and non-correlated assets performing more customarily than in the expansive downturn of late 2008. Proper diversification has proven vital to success in the beginning months of 2009.

In Basketball and Investing, Strategy Wins the Game

By Jonathan Citrin – Founder and CEO, CitrinGroup

How do you gauge success? In sports, numbers and statistics have always been king; we judge professional athletes primarily based on a few familiar and well-established numerical guidelines. Points per game, batting average, and rushing yards have long occupied our attention and respect. Dollars and Sense

  • Dow Jones Industrial Average – A stock index that was created by Charles Dow in the 19th century. Though widely recognized, the Dow is not an accurate indicator of the U.S. economy or even the stock market. In fact, the Dow only measures 30 companies that are subjectively picked by editors of the Wall Street Journal. Moreover, it is a price-weighted average, giving higher-priced stocks much more impact than lower-priced stocks.

  • Bailout – An act of loaning or giving capital to a failing business in order to save it from bankruptcy, insolvency, or total liquidation and ruin. Previously, the largest government bailout occurred during the Great Depression when the government loaned nearly $10.5 billion. In today's dollars, this equals just over $150 billion.

  • In 1960, the now infamous conman Bernie Madoff founded his company, Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities, as a penny stock trader with the $5,000 he had earned working as a lifeguard. As his firm grew, Madoff began using innovative computer information technology to disseminate its quotes, leading Madoff to found the NASDAQ in 1971 where he later served as Chairman of the Board of Directors. At the time, he was viewed as a pioneer in the industry; no one knowing what terrible, filthy things he was capable of.
