Since the beginning of the year:
- S&P 500 is up 4.00%
- Treasury bills rose to a yield of 0.14%
- Gold is up 11.99%
- Lead is up 63.03%
Significance:
While some may be eager to predict the end of the downturn and go heavy into stocks, the recent success of the
equity market has been damaged by continued high levels of volatility. Maintaining a consistent, unbiased asset
allocation is vital in turbulent economic times.

Dollars and Sense
- Shadow Banking System – Institutions that function as the intermediary between an investor and a
borrower. Shadowing banking institutions, such as Lehman Brothers or Bear Stearns, lend investor money upfront and
profit from borrower interest. When short-term investments in liquid markets, such as the housing market, declined,
these institutions struggled to repay investors, and thus contributed to what is now being referred to as the
worst financial crisis since the Depression.
- Troubled Asset Relief Program or TARP – A United States' governmental program established in 2008
that purchases assets and equity from financial institutions for the purpose of strengthening bank lending
potential and, consequently, the economy. The initiative was instated primarily to mitigate the negative impact of
rising subprime mortgage defaults.
- Standard & Poor's stock index was initially introduced in 1923 as an index to monitor the general rise and
fall of the nation's largest actively traded companies. On October 11, 2007, the present day S&P 500 set its
intra-day record of 1,576.09.
